Wedding party is a cultural custom of marriage in order to inform widely about the acceptance of the society and both families on the marriage of that couple. "Hon" infers the girl's parents; on the other hand, "nhan" infers the boys' family. Therefore, "hon nhan" is an important event of the two families.
However, according to the researchers, the Vietnamese word "Hon nhan" (i.e. marriage) has origin from the Han ideogram (Chinese letters). The word "hon" derives from the word "sunset" since wedding parties often take place in the evening. And the word "nhan" comes from the meaning "coming", which indicates the event the girl coming to the her partner's house. By this way of explanation, "hon nhan" (marriage) means a ceremony at which a girl comes to her boy's house in the evening.
As a rule of the custom, the marriage of a couple completely depends on the decision of the man's family. Until the mature age of their son, which means the time of "boy 16 and girl 13", the boy's family often find out a suitable girl for him to get married. Because of this old perception, many newly-married couples are still very young, and sometimes the girl is much older than the boy. And the aged people usually say that the best ages for a couple to be happy and lucky is stated in the rule "first, girl is two years older; second, boy is one year older" and also "husband and wife with the same age will have luck for their whole life".
The matchmaker who connects the couple's love also plays a very important role in marriage. In the past, there are people who specialise in connecting services; if that couple live happy with each other, the woman connected them will be their benefactor for the whole life. After the rites, that woman is given a half of a tray of steamed glutinous rice, a half chicken and silky clothes. At the day celebrating one full month since the couple's first child's birthday, that woman will be invited to the party as a way of showing their gratitude.
Nowadays, when the society develops more and more, the young people pay more attention and respect to marriage and have a want to keep the married life everlasting. Besides, the monogamy tradition, marriage between one husband and one wife, becomes a popular and legal style of marriage in the society.
