Taboos during Tet festival
According to the Vietnamese, good things during very first days of a lunar new year will definitely bring about an entire good year to their family and country with peace, prosperity and happiness.

Taboo of entombment: Lunar new year is considered to be very holy since it starts for an entire year. Any private sorrow should be left aside in order to mix with joy of the whole country. Hence, Vietnam has its own custom to conceal their mourning head-band for three days during Tet festival.Families with deep mourning do not go for wishing others a happy new year, do not give present to other as congratulation on advancement in years to their neighbors, but neighbors should visit these families to wish them a happy new year and at the same time comfort these unlucky families.

In case a person may pass away on 30th December, it should be good for that family to handle their entombment on that day as completion to make sure that the entombment will not last till next day (the first day of a lunar new year). If someone is unlucky to die on the first day of a lunar new year, mourning-wearing ceremony is to be delayed till the second day of that lunar new year.

1st day of Tet festival: people hates others coming to ask for fire since they think that fire is in red color which means luck. Giving luck on the first day of a lunar new year means to throw away their luck, then they will be unlucky.

During these days, people abstain from cleaning their houses since a Chinese legend had it that: any family whose house is cleaned during Tet festival, they then go bankrupt in that year since litter which is emptied will bring along God of Fortune.

Taboo of having some certain kinds of foods: People abstain from some foods such as: dog meat, hypophthalmichthys, duck meat, etc. It is considered to be unlucky if these foods are had during Tet festival. Besides, the elder people advise their descendants not to break bowls, plates, pots, cups; not to quarrel; not to bring about any sorrow to their family. Risky or bad statements are also kept off during Tet festival.

Taboo of departure on the fifth: the fifth of lunar calendar is considered to be anniversary of death, totally not good for any departure. Vietnamese folk verses have it that: the 5th, 14th, and 23rd are totally not good for any purposes, even travelling for pleasure let alone travelling for trade.
