Wedding ceremony of Vietnamese People in the past
A couple loving each other, after a long time of learning and comprehending the partner, will go on to arrange a betrothal ceremony with the permission of parents of both parties. After a period of time, about three or five months later, the boy’s family will choose a good day to celebrate their child’s wedding party. Before the wedding rites time, there is another ceremony called “Visiting daughter-in-law and her parents rites”; this happens simply and there are only a matchmaker and the groom’s parents. At this ceremony, the groom’s parents give their daughter-in-law jewelries; much or little jewelries is upon to their financial situation. The girl’s family will ask for offerings, and the boy’s family will reply and inform the time getting the girl to their house. In the old days, the old people are extremely careful in choosing wedding day. They often consider two books “Ngoc Hap” and “Thong Tho”, and then check the lucky hour and daytime in “Dai Ban Calendar” with the purpose of selecting the best day for wedding which is suitable for the couple’s ages.

Before celebrating the wedding, the couple needs to go to the local office and write the names of both parties’ families, including the bride and groom, at the bureau caring for births, deaths and marriage.

The ward assembly then sticks a proclamation paper at the office in 10 days, after the wedding day of that couple. This procedure helps prevent whether someone wants to interfere in the wedding and prove that the marriage is totally immaculate; both the boy and the girl are still of unblemished virtue.

During the wedding rituals, the groom wears blue loose shirt and a turban; and the bride wears red shirt and a basket-shaped bamboo hat. Both have parasols covering above.

The main offerings include a pair of candles, a tray of betel and areca, and wine. This rite requires six pieces of betel and six pieces of areca, which infers that they have enough six rituals. If the bride’s family demands a wedding pig, the groom party will bring it along. The betel and areca tray and the bowl of wine also require two persons to carry. Later on, people realise that it is so inconvenient to have a pig as a companion, they have dismissed this habit.

The ceremony is usually very crowded and animated and people coming to the ceremony will be invited to the party and regaled sumptuously by the groom’s family. These days, wedding day in Vietnam is simpler than in the past. Though, the main rites together with integral symbols such as the tray of betel and areca, the jar of wine and the pair of candles always appear in the happy day of the young couple.
