Ha Long Bay is a part of the Gulf of Bac Bo, in the north-eastern of Vietnam, including the sea area of Ha Long City, Cam Pha Town and a part of Van Don Islandish District. The southern-north of the bay is next to Cat Ba island; the west is bounded by the sea; and the rest borders on the mainland with the coastline of 120 kilometres.
The total area of Ha Long Bay is 1,553 square kilometres, consisting of 1,969 small and large islands (989 of these have not been named). The islands there have two main types: limestone islands and schist islands. They mainly gather in the southern-east (belonging to Bái Tử Long Gulf) and the southern-west (of Ha Long Gulf). These islands have geographically tectonic age between 250 and 280 million years. The area that includes plenty of isles in which is spectacular scenery along with famous, beautiful grottos is the Natural Heritage Centre of Ha Long Bay.
This natural heritage area of 434 square kilimotres has been acknowledged by the whole world, comprising of 775 islands that made up a triangle with its three angles are Đau Go Island, Ba Ham Lake, and Cong Tay Island. The adjacent area is the buffer zone and is recognised as beautiful places and relics of the nation by the Ministry of Culture and Information in 1962.
Ha Long Bay is a community of islands that are various with many great and small shapes and give us the feeling as if we were going among a world of animals which are all fossilised after millions years. On these islands are diverse, interesting grottos such as: Wood's Head Grotto, Pelican Grotto, Middle Entrance Grotto (also known as Con Giá Grotto or Maiden Grotto), Empty Grotto and Amazing Grotto.
Besides, Ha Long has many puddles, gulfs, and places widened or tightened. Boating on the bay's surface will meet tortuous alleys due to the isles that emerge and vanish suddenly in your view.
In addition, Ha Long also has a treasure with lots of sea creatures, animals and plants (more than 1,000 species of fish, including 730 named species; many of these are famous and delicious fish: pomfret, mackerel, anchovy, herring, etc.). This is also the region of holothurians, abalone and pearl.
With those salient values, Ha Long Bay is ranged into The Cultural Heritages of The World in the 18th meeting of UNESCO in December 1994, Thailand. Then in 2000, UNESCO acknowledged this place the second time owing to its values of geology and geomorphology.
